Allward, Dean Winston
Ann Arbor, MI

Age 88, passed away Saturday, March 6, 2010 at noon of natural causes at Superior Woods in Ypsilanti. He was born July 8, 1921 in Ypsilanti, the youngest son of George Henry and Mary Anna "May" (Beswick-Thompson) Allward Jr.

His siblings were George, Ivan and Madeline, all born and raised in Ypsilanti. He was a "good and honorable man" with lots of wisdom to share. He was a true engineer, always inventing, building and fixing. He loved his grandchildren's activities and was an avid watcher of the local sports teams. Dean was a 1939 graduate of Ypsilanti High School and attended Eastern MI University, where he played football for Elton Rynearson. In 1940, he started a formal training program in drafting and engineering at the Ford Motor Company in Dearborn. He worked as a principle design engineer (body and glass) for Ford for 38 years, retiring in 1979. Dean met Mary Jane (Kallstrom) in high school, they married April 12, 1942 in Willow Run, MI at the Martha Mary Chapel and they had four children. Mary Jane died November 18, 2000 in Ann Arbor. Dean joined the U.S. Army as an infantryman during World War II and was wounded in the Philippines, receiving the Purple Heart and other medals for his military service. He was a life member of the American Legion #282, AMVETS, Disabled American Veterans and the Veterans of Foreign War. Dean was a lifetime member of the Masonic Temple in Ypsilanti. He was an outstanding natural athlete, lettering nine times, who continued to enjoy golf, softball and bowling. He had golf memberships at Inverness in Gregory, MI and Brookridge in Florida. He also enjoyed traveling and camping, was a founding member of the Forty Diners club in Ypsilanti and was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Ypsilanti. His other passion was his family. He is survived by: four sons, Dennis of St. Louis, MO, Gary (Kim) of Grand Blanc, MI, Lance (Lila) of Commerce Township, MI and Kirk (Cindy) of Ypsilanti; nine grandchildren, Andrew, Joy, Anne Marie, David, Joshua, Lindsay, Adrien, Kelly and Holli; three great grandchildren, Jayden, Alex and Nathan; and several nieces and nephews. He was involved in many of his children's activities, such as the PTA and Boy Scouts, as well as with his grandchildren. Dean and Mary Jane retired to Brooksville, FL (Brookridge) in the winter months and lived in Ann Arbor in the summer months to be close to his family. The funeral service will be 11:00 am Thursday, March 11 at Stark Funeral Service with his son, Gary Allward, officiating. Burial will follow in Highland Cemetery. Contributions in his memory may be made to the American Cancer Society. Envelopes are available at the funeral home where the family will receive friends 2-4 & 6-9 pm Wednesday.
